An unprecedented heat wave is occurring in the Northwest of the United States, along the Pacific coast, with temperatures reaching 37.7 degrees Celsius on June 26 (local time).

The National Weather Service (NWS) said that all areas of Washington and Oregon, as well as parts of Idaho, Wyoming and California are on alert for hot weather, with temperatures rising sharply compared to other areas. with normal levels over the weekend and early next week.

In Seattle, Washington state, the temperature reached nearly 39 degrees Celsius on June 26 and may reach a new record of more than 41 degrees Celsius on June 28. The Seattle government is urging 725,000 residents to drink plenty of water, close their windows, use fans, or go to a city-established cooler if needed.

In a statement, Dr. Jennifer Vines, health official for Multnomah County, Oregon, warned this was a life-threatening heatwave and advised people to seek shelter in a cool place in the coming days.

Multnomah County, which includes Oregon's capital city Portland, opened three cooling centers over the weekend. Cooling centers have also been set up in California and other parts of the Northwest as a heatwave blankets the region.

In an interview with Reuters news agency, meteorologist Eric Schoening of the US National Meteorological Administration said that unusual weather phenomena could become more common amid rising global temperatures.
