When it comes to finding a device to use to read your ebooks, you have a few options to choose from. You can always buy a tablet or use your phone, but those devices are multipurpose and can be used for a ton of things, like surfing the web or doom-scrolling on Twitter. If you are looking for something to strictly read books, e-readers, while niche, are designed to store all of your books in a virtual library with limited functionality.

Amazon, one of the pioneers of the e-reader, has dominated the space for years with its ever-expanding Kindle lineup, which consists of several unique models with their own pros and cons. The bulk of the devices function as simple ebook readers; however, with the forthcoming Kindle Scribe, Amazon looks to be moving beyond books and into the realm of writing — something that should allow it to function more akin to physical paper.

Below, we’ve listed each Kindle model currently available. Sometimes, there isn’t a deal for one or any of the products, but we’ve mentioned the most recent sale price in those instances. Also, keep in mind that Amazon’s Prime Early Access Sale will take place on October 11th and 12th, meaning we may see even steeper discounts on last-gen models or the first price cuts on the latest entry-level Kindle and Kindle Kids. If we don’t, however, remember that Amazon also offers a 20 percent discount on all of its Kindles when you trade in select devices, so there are still other ways to save money when none of the models are on sale.

The best Kindle (2022) deals

In case you missed it, Amazon announced a new entry-level Kindle ahead of its recent hardware event, one that’s designed to replace the aging 2019 model. The latest Kindle — which will be available on October 12th and starts at $99.99 — puts Amazon’s base e-reader more in line with the most recent Kindle Paperwhite, providing a number of quality-of-life improvements in the process. The new model features longer battery life, a 300ppi screen, and now charges via USB-C instead of Micro USB. It also touts 16GB of storage and comes in a new “denim” color, which resembles the soft blue you might associate with jeans.

Although Amazon occasionally offers preorder discounts for new items, the forthcoming Kindle is currently only available at Amazon and Best Buy with ads for $99.99 or in an ad-free configuration at Amazon for $119.99, both of which come with four months of Kindle Unlimited. We haven’t had an opportunity to review the new model yet; however, it looks to be a fairly iterative update over the last-gen Kindle, rendering it a more worthwhile option if you’re looking to pick up an e-reader for $40 less than the price of the latest Paperwhite.

The best Kindle Kids (2022) deals

The new base Kindle wasn’t the only e-reader Amazon introduced last month. The new entry-level model will arrive alongside a new Kindle Kids, which is identical to the standard model but comes with a handful of accessories and provides age-appropriate content for younger readers who prefer digital books. Like the last-gen Kindle Kids, the new model will retail for $20 more than the base model when it arrives on October 12th, bringing the MSRP to $119.99.

In terms of add-ons, the new Kindle Kids edition consists of four items: the device, a case, a two-year extended replacement guarantee (in the event the device breaks), and one year of Amazon Kids Plus. The latter is the biggest selling point of the device aside from the kid-friendly patterns, as it allows parents to grant their kids access to a digital library of kid-friendly books like Percy Jackson and the entire Harry Potter series at no additional cost.

The 2022 Kindle Kids has yet to receive a discount; however, it is currently available for preorder for $119.99 at Amazon and Best Buy if you want to reserve it ahead of its release.

The best Kindle (2019) deals

Despite the impending arrival of Amazon’s latest base Kindle, the 10th-gen model remains Amazon’s most affordable e-reader, one that usually retails for $89.99. Released in 2019, the base Kindle includes a front light, 8GB of storage, and comes with or without ad support. Also, despite having the same 167ppi resolution as its predecessors, the last-gen model features a slightly higher contrast than earlier Kindles.

The 10th-gen Kindle normally starts at $89.99 with ads, but we did see it on sale in July for as low as $44.99 during Amazon Prime Day. Those sales have since ended, however, and the ad-supported model is now only available at retailers like Amazon, Target, and Best Buy for $89.99, the e-reader’s full retail price. The same thing goes for the ad-free model, which is available on Amazon in either black or white for $109.99.

Given the general lack of discounts right now, we’d recommend picking up the 2022 Kindle over the 2019 model, especially given that the latest model touts a USB-C port and a host of long-awaited upgrades. Nonetheless, it’s still worth keeping an eye out for substantial price cuts on the 2019 model as Amazon looks to offload the remaining stock in the coming months.

The best Kindle Kids (2019) deals

The entry-level Kindle and Oasis models were not the only ones that received a refresh in 2019. Amazon also released the last-gen Kindle Kids, which offers all the same perks as the 2019 Kindle but comes with one of four printed covers, an extended two-year warranty, and a year of Amazon’s Kids Plus service. Despite its age, it still typically retails for $109.99 ($20 more than the 2019 base Kindle at standard MSRP).

On the deals front, we recently saw the last-gen Kindle Kids drop to a mere $49.99 on Amazon as part of the retailer’s two-day Prime Day promotion. Sadly, Amazon is no longer selling the kid-friendly device at that price, though it is still available at Amazon and Best Buy for its full retail price of $109.99. That said, we highly suggest that you consider picking up the 2022 model upon its release, namely because it retails for a mere $10 more than the 2019 model and offers a better display, USB-C support, and a slew of other improvements.

The best Kindle Paperwhite (2021) deals

Amazon’s latest Kindle Paperwhite is its 11th-gen model, which comes with USB-C support, longer battery life, and a larger 6.8-inch display. Given the e-reader launched just last year, however, we haven’t seen a ton of steep discounts yet. Thankfully, you can still pick up the last-gen model, which is frequently available for far less than the standard retail price.

The 2021 Kindle Paperwhite comes in three main configurations: an 8GB model with ads for $139.99, an 8GB model without ads for $159.99, and a 32GB ad-free Signature Edition for $189.99. The latter is identical to the standard Paperwhite except it also features Qi wireless charging and a sensor that will automatically adjust the backlight when needed. Amazon has also rolled out a Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition for $159.99, which comes bundled with a kid-friendly cover, a two-year extended replacement guarantee, and a year of Amazon Kids Plus, much like the aforementioned Kindle Kids. All 2021 models are also similar to the 2018 model in that they feature a waterproof design and Audible audiobook support.

We recently saw the ad-supported Paperwhite drop to $94.99 for Amazon Prime members, which is just $5 less than the e-reader’s current starting price at Amazon, Target, and Best Buy. If you buy the e-reader at Amazon, however, you’ll also receive three months of Kindle Unlimited at no additional cost. You can also pick up the ad-free model at Amazon for $119.99 ($40 off), which is nearly its best price to date.

As for bundles, Amazon is offering the 2021 Paperwhite as part of a discounted package that contains a power adapter and your choice of a fabric cover for $137.97 (with delayed shipping), a leather cover for $126.97, or a “cork” cover for $134.97, all three of which are more than $70 off.

As for the 32GB ad-free Signature Edition, it’s available at Amazon and Best Buy right now for $134.99, about $55 off the e-reader’s typical list price. If you prefer a bundle, Amazon is currently selling it in three configurations: one with a cork cover and a wireless charging dock for $179.97 ($90 off), one with a fabric cover and a wireless charging dock for $162.97 ($87 off), and one with a leather cover and a wireless charging dock for $171.97 ($88 off).

Lastly, if you’re looking for the Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition, it’s available at Amazon and Best Buy right now for $109.99, which is $50 off and matches its best price to date.

The best Kindle Paperwhite (2018) deals

Although there are a number of deals available on the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite, it’s worth noting that retailers like Amazon and Best Buy also often lower the price of the last-gen model during major shopping holidays like Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day.

Case in point? The 2018 e-reader is available on Amazon right now in refurbished configuration with 32GB of storage for $69.99 — about $30 less than the 2021 model is currently going for at multiple retailers.

The best Kindle Oasis (2019) deals

The Kindle Oasis is the most expensive of the lineup, starting at $250. The device comes in two storage configurations, 8GB or 32GB, and like the other models, you can get it with or without ads on the lock screen.

The 2019 Kindle Oasis looks very similar to the previous model. It retains its waterproof seven-inch 300ppi E Ink display and supports Audible audiobooks via Bluetooth. However, unlike previous models, it can adjust the color temperature to a yellow-toned display, making it easier to read at night.

In the past, we’ve seen the 8GB Kindle Oasis drop to as low as $174.99, which remains the lowest price for the standalone configuration to date. Luckily, the 8GB ad-supported Oasis is currently available at Amazon and Best Buy for $179.99 ($70 off), which nearly matches said price. If you prefer the model without ads, you can pick it up on Amazon for $199.99 ($70 off) with three months of Kindle Unlimited. Lastly, if you need additional storage, the 32GB model is available on Amazon with ads for $199.99 ($80 off) or for $219.99 without ($80 off).
